St John's Church, early 20th century.

Before boundary changes this Anglican Church was in Godley-cum-Newton Green, Hyde. It was built in 1848/49 and the architect was Edwin Hugh Shellard of Manchester on behalf of the Church Commissioners and Samuel Drinkwater was the clerk of works. It was consecrated on the 11 Apr 1850 by the Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd John Graham. It was built of snecked stone with a graduated slate roof in the early English decorated style. The tower was added in 1876/79 and the architect was Thomas Worthington of Manchester.

Further to the tower being built in 1876/79, other alterations include: The addition of the south porch in 1867, interior alterations and renovations in 1885/91, an organ built in a new chamber in 1894, interior alterations with the removal of the west gallery in 1911, the lych gate built and electric lighting installed in 1919/20.

St John's Church closed in 2019 and it is listed Grade II, List Entry No. 1068083.

St Thomas’s Church

St Thomas's Church.

This church is built of random polygonal sandstone with bands of red brick. Polygonal masonry contains stones with five or more face angles. It was built in 1867/68 and the architect was James Medland Taylor of Manchester and the contractors were Messrs Robinson & Son of Hyde. Minor alterations were made in the 20th century.

The four stained-glass windows were all installed by Morris & Co of London. The first three of these were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones while the fourth was a war-memorial window designed by John Henry Dearle and fitted in 1919.

  1. A three-light east window depicting The Virgin, Christ as Love and St John.
  2. A rose window, depicting angels with pipes, fitted above the three-light window.
  3. A two-light north window depicting St Thomas and St Hilda.
  4. A two-light south window depicting St George and Christ.
