Austin Hopkinson JP MP ((24 Jun 1879-2 Sep 1962)) was the Independent Member of Parliament for the Mossley Constituency (Mossley, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Lees & Limehurst) from 1918 to 1929 and 1931 to 1945. He was a benefactor to local causes and a strong believer in fulfilling social responsibilities.

He founded Austin Hopkinson & Co in 1905 for the manufacture of mining machinery. In 1934 his company was incorporated as Austin Hopkinson & Co Ltd and in 1958 the company leased a factory at Penygroes, Caernarfon. He is noted for his invention of a longwall coal-cutting machine in 1908.
His engineering works, known as Delta Works, was situated in Audenshaw at the bottom of Hanover Street South, off the east side (53.47402,-2.11820). This part of Hanover Street South is no longer extant and a modern building now stands on the site of Delta Works. However, this is accessed along Delta Road in commemoration of the name of the works.
